Sony Beefs Up Internals of VAIO S Notebook

Tuesday, February 22, 2011

Sony has just put some heavyweight components in its lightweight VAIO S series of notebooks. These new SKUs boast of new specifications like the new SandyBridge Core i5-2410M CPU, 4GB of DDR3 1333MHz RAM, 500GB hard drive,built-in 3G WWAN, AMD Radeon HD 6470M and a 13.3" screen with a 1366x768 resolution.

Other standard features include, WiFi 'n', Bluetooth 2.1, USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0 port. Along the hardware, the laptop also features Sony's very own Fast Boot system that speeds up the booting time. The laptop weighs 1.7Kg along with the battery but there is no mention of what sort of a battery will be used (Li-Ion, Li-polymer) or the capacity.

The new laptops are said to go on sale by the end of March, so details on actual availability and pricing should surface later. Given the weight and size of the laptop, expect to pay a slight premium since power and portability don't come cheap. The new addition is the Mobility HD 6470M GPU which according to Notebookcheck should be based on the older 5000 series core. You can therefore expect it to perform slightly better than the Mobility HD 5470.
