Almost every computer maker has shown or announced plans for Tablet computer in this year. Surprisingly Sony has been all hush about the same. Engadget has got some exclusive tips from two "highly trusted and independent" sources that Sony is secretly working on Google Android 3.0 Honeycomb based 9.4-inch tablet codenamed - S1. It might turn out to be first PlayStation Certified tablet. Sources have given ample amount of tips including the detail that developing team is lead by VAIO organization and the engineering team combines the brains who worked on Reader, VAIO, PlayStation and Sony Ericsson products.

Amidst several Android based tablets, Sony S1 tablet would certainly try to stand out with its unique design and customized Android interface. Here are the quick pointers that I could infer from Engadget Author Thomas Ricker's post.

- 9.4-inch high gloss touchscreen with approximately 1280x800 pixel resolution
- Dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 Processor
- Google Android 3.0 Honeycomb interface being customized to meet S1's specifications.
- Entirely Qriocity focused to bring music, games, eBooks and videos
- Possibility of featuring a Q-center button as the home button to signify the Qriocity services
- Only two buttons - Volume On/Off, located on the indented side
- Gaming features include Sony PS One games preloaded, PlayStation Integration and PlayStation Certified for running Android platform games on it.
- Wrap design similar to magazines folded backside to read single page
- When placed on the table the bulge/wrap offers bit of elevation and lets user type comfortably on the on-screen keyboard
- Screen UI supports ambidextrous usage
- Almost same size and weight as that of Apple iPad
- Front facing and back panel camera
- USB-A port for Flash Drives or other input devices
- Infrared port
- Back-side is made of materials offering better grip
The Wi-Fi only model's target price was said to be $599 and is planned to start shipping from September onwards. May be Sony was looking to unveil this tablet at the E3 Expo in June and steal the show. We'll have to wait and watch to see if this 'speculation' turns into actual product or gets canned.
