Audi India may be contemplating about its CKD operations, but it isn't going slow on its CBU operations any time soon. After the launch of the A8 sedan (in 3.0 TDI, 4.2 FSI and 6.0 W12 guise) and the Q5's 2.0 TDI variant, it is now gearing up for another major launch. Just three months after the R8 V10 coupe, it is now ready for the Spyder drop-top to hit Indian roads.
Slated for launch on March 25, the R8 V10 Spyder weighs a good 100 kg over the coupe. Powered by the same V10 motor found on the coupe, the 525 bhp Spyder can accelerate from 0-100 kph in just 4.1 seconds and go on to a top speed of just over 310 kph. Using an electrohydraulic setup, the soft top latches itself into place within 19 seconds. Weighing just 30 kg, the whole setup helps keep the centre of gravity low.
Audi isn't talking about a price for the car just yet, but considering the Rs 1.324 crore price tag for the coupe, we would guess that they might price it around Rs 1.45 crore for the drop top version. The first car is expected to be delivered to a music magnate in Mumbai with a penchant for red convertibles. Whether this does start a trend or not remains to be seen, considering drop tops, especially those equipped with soft tops haven't really done well in India traditionally. The V10 has been quite a success for Audi with over a dozen cars already sold in the first three months and we still have the better part of the year still to go.
