Finally, it has made it to the Cannes programme in its 'Out of Competition' section, albeit a little late and seemingly through the back door. It is a documentary on Bollywood films, being presented as a 'feature film' produced 'exclusively for the 64th Festival de Cannes'. Amitabh Bachchan will feel relieved now. He had participated in the project believing it to be a film to be showcased in Cannes and had even proudly blogged about it on his site.
BOLLYWOOD - THE GREATEST LOVE STORY EVER TOLD is a tribute to Bollywood that brings together 'the most beautiful moments in the history of Indian musical films, with all their moving pageantry and dance. It is a swirling and poignant montage.' It has been put together by its producers Shekhar Kapoor, UTV Motion Pictures with Ronnie Screwvala and Trishya Screwvala, and directors Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and Jeff Zimbalist.
The exercise seems to be aimed at pitching Bollywood cinema as a unique genre and encourage its acceptance by the global cinema audiences and aficionados. To quote the Cannes press release, "We love it. We hate it. We see it as regressive. We see it as modern. We need to breathe it to feel alive. Some say it is the only culture that holds India together. Some say it gives identity and individuality to 25 million Indians that have left her shores and who's third generations that are still addicted to it. That's Bollywood!"
