CW is the next work to announce the new pilots they have picked up for the fall 201-12 season. While their upfront presentation isn't until May 19, they are giving fans a bit of a peak of the three new dramas hitting the network.
The three new series sees the return of a beloved TV star and two Life Unexpected stars get another crack at success on the CW.
First up is The Ringer starring Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Gellar makes her return to TV as a woman on the run from the mob who inhabits the life of his twin sister. The twin sister is wanted as well. Kris Polaha (Life Unexpected), Ioann Gruffudd (Fantastic Four) and Nestor Carbonell (Lost) co-star.
The Secret Cirlce comes from the minds of Kevin Williamsom (The Vampire Diaries) and Andrew Miller. Based on a book series from TVD author L.J. Smith, the series centers on a young girl (Britt Robertson, Life Unexpected) who discovers she is part of a coven of witches after moving to a new town. She's also the key to unlocking a centuries-old battle of good vs. evil. Also starring in the series are Thomas Dekker (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), Gale Harold (Hellcats, Desperate Housewives), Shelley Hennig (Days of Our Lives) and Phoebe Tonkin (Home and Away).
Hart of Dixie sees The O.C. creator Josh Schwartz reunite with series star Rachel Bilson (screw you The O.C. curse). Bilson will play a young doctor who moves to a small Southern town full of eccentric people after she inherits a medical practice.
We all know with the cancellation of Hellcats and Smallville ending after 10 years, there are two open spots on CW primetime lineup. But with this announcement of three new shows and the fact that the CW doesn't air original programming during the 10 p.m. hour, one show on the CW has to go. With Top Model, Supernatural, Gossip Girl, 90210 and The Vampire Diaries, it easy to deduce that either Nikita, Hellcats or One Tree Hill will be getting the boot.
Of the three, I suspect either OTH or Hellcats going. Nikita has been strong on Thursday nights following CW's top-rated series The Vampire Diaries, but with the addition of The Secret Circle, I'm betting that the CW will place it at 9 p.m. to follow TVD, two shows based off the writings of the same man; L.J Smith. If Nikita stays, it could possibly move to Friday nights with Supernatural.
However, I can picture Ringer being placed on Friday night with Supernatural and Hart of Dixie being paired with ANTM on Wednesdays or placed on Tuesdays with either OTH or Hellcats.
Will One Tree Hill get one last season for a proper send-off? Will freshman series Nikita and Hellcats score second seasons? Only time will tell.
[UPDATE]
CW just announced that they will renewing One Tree Hill for a ninth and possibly final season and Nikita for a second season. We won't know CW's new fall schedule until Thursday, but I suspect that The Secret Circle will be paired with The Vampire Diaries on Thursdays, Hart of Dixie will be paired with One Tree Hill on Tuesdays, Nikita will be moved to Fridays with Supernatural and Ringer will be on Wednesdays with ANTM.
