'Fast Five' Races To No. 1 At Box Office

Sunday, May 1, 2011

Who would've thought there would be more than one Fast and the Furious movie? I sure didn't.

The stars of the previous four Fast movies came together for the fifth movie in the franchise and people came out in droves to see it. Fast Five raked in $83.6 million over the weekend, marking the beginning of the summer blockbuster season. This marks Universal's best opening weekend ever, topping The Lost World: Jurrassic Park's take of $72.1 million.

Overseas, Fast Five hit theaters a week ago and grossed an impressive $45.3 million. It's total international take is $81.4 million, bringing it's worldwide cume to $165 million. The film topped Marvel's Thor, which is expcted to make a big splash in North America when it opens in theaters May 6.

While everyone went to see Fast Five, no one seemed to even bother go and see the other two new releases of the weekend. Hoodwinked Too! had to settled for the No. 6 spot with $4.1 million and Disney's Prom took in $5 million for the No. 5 spot.

Fast Five's closet competition was miles away. Last's week's No. 1 Rio slipped to No. 2 with $14.4 million. Madea's Big Family Reunion placed third with $10 million, while the Robert Pattinson-Reese Witherspoon starring Water for Elephants came in the No. 4 spot with $9.1 million.
