'Thor' Hammers Its Way to No. 1 At Box Office

This could be the summer of superheroes.

The first of many superhero themed movies opened at the box office this weekend and showed its superhuman strength. Marvel Studios/Paramount Pictures Thor took the top spot over the weekend with $66 million. Overseas, the movie proved to be popular, raking in $46 million.

Last week's No. 1, Fast Five, showed that people still love fast cars, Vin Diesel and Paul Walker. The sequel came in second with $32.5 million. It's overseas tallies broke the studio's all-time foreign weekend mark, grossing $86.6 million. It broke the previous record holder, King Kong, with $84.3 million.

In other new release news, Jumping the Broom, finished in third. The Ensemble comedy starring Mike Epps, Laz Alonso, and Paula Patton took in $13.7 million. Kate Hudson's Something Borrowed opened in the fourth spot with $13.2 million.

Will Thor be able to stay atop the box office next weekend? The R-rated comedy Bridesmaids and the vampire flick Priest could pose a threat. Don't be surprised if Thor takes a second week at No. 1.
