Katy Perry: 'I Didn't Have a Childhood'

Tuesday, May 3, 2011

Katy Perry has never avoided talking about her strict Christian upbringing; She once told a reporter that in her family, speaking in tongues was no big thing. But in a new profile for Vanity Fair, Perry explains that because of her parents' beliefs, she "didn't have a childhood."

Perry was not allowed to listen to secular music, nor did her parents read her any books other than the Bible. What's more, she wasn't allowed to say "deviled eggs" or "Dirt Devil."

Naturally, Perry's parents don't approve of everything their daughter does, but that doesn't mean they don't have a great relationship. "I think sometimes when children grow up, their parents grow up," Perry explained. "Mine grew up with me. We coexist. I don't try to change them anymore, and I don't think they try to change me. We agree to disagree. They're excited about [my success]. They're happy that things are going well for their three children and that they're not on drugs. Or in prison."
