Kristen Wiig Has Retired Gilly from 'SNL'

Tuesday, May 3, 2011

Saturday Night Live just got a little less annoying. Six-season veteran Kristen Wiig has reportedly retired Gilly the evil school-girl, afro, overbite and all, and won't even play the character at the request of producer Lorne Michaels.

According to a new Time profile on the Bridesmaids star, she knows when to pack away a played-out recurring character, which is why we also haven't seen Penelope the one-upper for a while. But no love is lost between Wiig and her notoriously domineering boss, Michaels. He had nothing but nice things to say about her.

"There are two people who arrived fully formed -- her and Dana Carvey -- where you saw what they did in their audition and you put it on the air," he said. "She has that thing that Phil Hartman and Dan Aykroyd had, which is absolute precision, but also this lightness that isn't what they had."

In honor of the schoolgirl's demise, here's a clip from SNL's Gilly-centric Christmas special.
