AT&T to launch Android smartphones including Motorola Atrix 4G - Motorola Atrix 4G To Get 1080p Video Recording

Saturday, January 29, 2011

At CES on Press Day, LG unveiled the LG Optimus 2X, which they said was the world’s most powerful smartphone and also the first smartphone to have 1080p video recording. Just hours later at their press conference, Motorola announced the Atrix 4G, which they said was also the world’s most powerful smartphone. But, no 1080p video recording! Now, that will be corrected. Motorola is confirming that the Atrix 4G will do 1080p video recording and playback – sometime after launch.

This news was first reported by AndroidandMe’s Taylor Wimberly, who like me, wondered why Motorola wasn’t talking 1080p for the Atrix at CES. Now, the phone’s fact sheet, listed at Motorola’s website, very clearly shows that the phone will get an update that will enable to to do 1080p recording and playback, but as mentioned, it’s coming in a post-release OTA, not before.

Android updates can be very troublesome for the end user, of course. I mean, it takes forever for them to come out, it seems. Motorola is usually pretty good about quick updates, but AT&T, on the otherhand, was recently rated the worst American carrier for Android updates. So, I don’t know how long Motorola Atrix 4G users will have to wait before getting their 1080p video. Of course, then there’s the old argument about if there’s a difference between 720p and 1080p, save for a large file size.

1080p video recording and playback is a feature of NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 chipset. So, expect more and more “superphones”, to come out with this feature.

Motorola's state-of-the-art Atrix 4G smartphone won't break the bank if a couple of pricing rumors prove accurate.

On Thursday evening, an Amazon product page briefly listed the Atrix 4G for $150 with a new two-year contract. Amazon removed the page, but then Android Central received an image of a Costco inventory screen, also showing a $150 price tag. Third-party retailers usually sell phones for lower than the suggested price, so if these prices are correct, my guess is that AT&T will sell the Atrix 4G for $200, or $250 at the most.
